It's easy to picture Andy Warhol walking these halls, as he once did. The energy here is electrifying, and creativity runs high.
Our client, who now inhabits this beautiful downtown space, is a mission-driven, tech-education startup, with over 45 million users and nearly $50MM in funding from Union Square Ventures, Virgin Group, and other big players. Yep, this is high-visibility, high-impact stuff. Their name has incredible brand recognition, and their culture is inclusive, incredibly bright, and as go-gettery as they come.
Now they need a design leader....which is where you come in!
They are seeking a DIRECTOR OF PRODUCT DESIGN, with leanings in UX, who can oversee and grow a 3-5 person design team, and grow it to 8-10 within a year. The overall organization going through incredible growth right now; they nearly tripled their company size in the past couple of years, for a total of 80+ fulltime folks now.
Leadership and mentorship is a huge part of this job, and you consider yourself a "player / coach". You'll oversee a team that's currently 3 Product Designers, and you'll be tasked with growing that team to approx 10 people within a year, so they want someone who's managed at least 6-8 direct reports, if not more.
You are also a fine practitioner of the craft of design, and while you probably come up through the UX ranks yourself, you can oversee teams of hybrid designers who range on the UX/Visual spectrum, and you can bring things to final pixel-perfect visual completion, by way of styleguides and UI Kits - you don't have to be a RISD or SCAD type.
You can run and conduct User Research and User Testing as well - this is approx 10-15% of the job - and this is ideally a selling point for you.
You'll report into their esteemed VP of Product, who's got an incredibly killer educational background, longstanding experience at one of the hottest tech companies around, and who has a seat at the leadership table, assisting on high-level business needs. You'll completely own the Design discipline, and he is very supportive of Design continuing to have a very strong voice at the table.
The ideal candidate:
Like to haves:
• Master’s degree in a UX-related field (human-computer interaction, human factors, behavioral research, or graphic design).
• 5+ years of experience managing a product design team.
• Award winning product design work.
